Canon has officially launched<\/a> two RF-mount crop-sensor cameras, the EOS R7<\/a> and the EOS R10<\/a>. Both will \u201cbe available in late 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cameras are the first of their kind, combining Canon\u2019s mirrorless RF-mount technology – originally designed for full-frame products like the EOS R<\/a>, EOS RP<\/a>, and EOS R5<\/a> – with APS-C sensors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Canon has produced APS-C mirrorless cameras in the past, those models used the smaller EF-M mount and were not compatible with Canon\u2019s full-frame lenses. The EOS R7 and R10, in contrast, are fully compatible with pro-level RF-mount lenses; they can also be used with two just-announced Canon lenses, the RF-S 18-45mm f\/4.5-6.3 IS STM<\/a> and the RF-S 18-150mm f\/3.5-6.3 IS STM<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Canon, the R7 \u201cis the quintessential camera to take your photography to the next level\u201d and \u201ca powerful camera choice for those seeking an upgrade to their travel and vacation photos.\u201d A careful look at the specs, however, suggests the R7 is a high-end APS-C camera designed for action photography.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to a 32 MP sensor and powerful autofocus capabilities, the R7 features 15 frames-per-second shooting via the mechanical shutter and shoots a whopping 30 frames per second via the electronic shutter; this is faster than even the R3<\/a>, Canon\u2019s pro-level action camera, which offers 30 FPS with the electronic shutter but only 12 FPS with the mechanical shutter. Bird photographers<\/a> will have more than enough speed to capture outstanding birds-in-flight shots, while sports photographers can consistently nail those once-in-a-lifetime moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The R7 also boasts image stabilization for sharper handheld photography in low light, a robust body for easier outdoor shooting, and dual card slots for extra storage (or redundancy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Videographers and hybrid shooters will also find much to love about the EOS R7. The camera records uncropped 4K\/60p footage, and Canon claims that you can \u201c[r]ecord each clip over thirty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what makes the EOS R7 special is not any single specification. Rather, it\u2019s the combination of Canon\u2019s APS-C crop factor, access to top telephoto lenses, and fast-action shooting capabilities. Wildlife, bird, and sports photographers can mount lenses like the RF 400mm f\/2.8<\/a> and capture beautiful files at 640mm – and then, thanks to the high-resolution sensor, apply significant crops. It\u2019s a set of Canon capabilities not seen since the release of the Canon 7D Mark II way back in 2014, so the R7 should fill a substantial gap in Canon\u2019s mirrorless lineup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
